New York’s largest utility wants to raise customer bills by more than 10 percent.
Consolidated Edison, which serves 3.4 million electric and 1.1 million gas customers in New York City and Westchester County, filed a rate increase proposal Friday with the state’s utility regulator.
For the average residential customer, the request — if approved — would result in higher bills to the tune of an 11.4 percent increase for electricity and 13.3 percent for gas.
ConEd’s proposal kicks off a lengthy process including negotiations with the Department of Public Service staff, New York City, consumer advocates and environmental groups. Any increase is subject to approval by the Public Service Commission.
