Texas Republican Sen. Ted Cruz at a hearing Wednesday accused environmental groups, backed by China, of waging a “full-spectrum assault” against fossil fuels through climate change litigation.

Cruz’s charges — laid out in a hearing of the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Federal Courts, Oversight, Agency Action and Federal Rights, which he chairs — include Chinese government funding of environmental groups to litigate against oil companies, as well as green groups that have “brainwashed” judges to agree with them.

“Foreign money from entities tied to the Chinese Communist Party flows into the United States to bankroll climate advocacy groups who litigate against American energy,” Cruz alleged.

“Activist lawyers flood our courts with lawsuits designed not to win policy debates but to bankrupt energy producers and to dismantle energy infrastructure through sheer attrition,” he continued.
