Gov. Josh Stein wants to end all tax breaks for the power-hungry facilities. The Data Center Coalition says that would signal the state is “closed for business.”

The trade group representing the nation’s data centers is pushing back on North Carolina Gov. Josh Stein’s plan to sunset generous tax incentives for the industry.

“It sends a signal that North Carolina is closed for business,” Khara Boender, director of state policy for the Data Center Coalition, told POLITICO in a statement.

Stein has been in talks with lawmakers this week to solidify his plan to fully repeal sweeping tax exemptions for data centers by 2032. The Democrat is proposing to phase out tax breaks for construction, electricity and equipment — a move he says will ensure families are not burdened as power costs continue to climb.

“We can welcome innovation and give businesses certainty without requiring taxpayers to bankroll in perpetuity an industry with trillions of dollars already backing it,” Stein said in a statement to POLITICO.
