Democrats look to revive carbon border fee talks

Congressional Democrats are renewing their push for legislation that would charge global and domestic polluters for their carbon emissions.

Senate Environment and Public Works ranking member Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.) and Rep. Suzan DelBene (D-Wash.) reintroduced the “Clean Competition Act” Wednesday.

The bill would put in place a carbon border adjustment mechanism (CBAM) that would tax pollution-intensive imports and exports based on their carbon emissions.

Whitehouse has championed the bill in previous congressional terms, but it has failed to gain traction — and will likely stall again in Republican-led Washington.
