Senate Republicans are bucking President Donald Trump and voting on their own budget reconciliation blueprint this week, setting up hours of amendment votes, many of them focused on energy and climate change.
Even though Trump said on social media that the Senate should pass the House blueprint for one large party-line fiscal bill, senators are moving forward with a slimmer plan that would punt on thorny tax issues. A meeting with Vice President JD Vance on Wednesday did not change the calculus.
But before the Senate can pass its budget resolution, which would give committees instructions for writing a reconciliation bill that can become law by simple majority, lawmakers will need to process dozens of nonbinding amendments.
Democrats said they planned to force Republicans to take difficult votes on matters like electricity prices and rising insurance premiums.
