House Democrats are urging the Department of Justice to prosecute Energy Secretary Chris Wright, accusing him of falsely testifying in a June hearing that energy grant terminations last year were not based on politics.
Democratic leaders on the House Science, Space and Technology Committee fired off a letter to acting Attorney General Todd Blanche on Tuesday asking that DOJ review Wright’s testimony and consider bringing criminal charges.
The missive is an aggressive escalation of Democrats’ grievances against Wright after DOE suspended grants for more than 200 energy projects last fall — mostly in states led by Democrats.
The Trump administration said multiple times that it was reviewing the grant awards without regard for politics, but federal officials acknowledged in legal filings in July that the terminations were “based solely on the political identity of the grant recipient’s state.”
