Twelve House Democrats from Texas and beyond, including Natural Resources Committee ranking member Jared Huffman of California, on Friday urged Trump administration officials to delay construction of a border patrol road in Big Bend National Park.
The 24-feet wide proposed road would stretch across Mariscal Mountain and sit within an area the National Park Service has recommended as potential wilderness.
The letter — addressed to Secretary of State Marco Rubio; Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin; Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Rodney Scott; and Chad McIntosh, U.S. commissioner for the International Boundary and Water Commission — requests details on road design, controlled blasting and disposal plans before proceeding with further work.
The Democrats expressed concern that blasting a road across the mountain could send debris into the Rio Grande and cause irrevocable damage.
