House Democrats are waging war against the seniority system that has ruled committees for decades, moving to replace a handful of top leaders with younger ones.
The races may decide whether Democrats have killed seniority for good after a crushing election loss. The party’s Steering Committee in the House will decide Monday whom to recommend.
In play are the top Democratic spots on the Natural Resources, Agriculture, and Oversight and Accountability panels — all key to energy and environment policy.
“This has been an undertow of conversation for a very long time with folks, but I think it’s being done with the right balance,” said Rep. Mark Pocan (D-Wis.), a former chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus.
