Dems push to improve businesses’ GHG reporting

EPA would have to come up with uniform guidelines for businesses to use in calculating a major part of their carbon footprints, under newly introduced legislation by Senate and House Democrats.

The “Standardized Calculation of Operational Polluting Emissions (SCOPE) Act” would give the agency a year to develop the voluntary guidance for companies to tally the indirect “Scope 3” emissions of greenhouse gases throughout their supply chains, as opposed to tapping different approaches.

As the Trump administration rolls back GHG regulations and climate goals, the legislation is intended to provide “full transparency on the environmental impact” of individual businesses’ operations, Democratic California Sen. Adam Schiff said in a news release.

Schiff last week introduced S. 3928, the Senate version of the bill. He had previously carried an earlier version during the 118th Congress when in the House. The lead sponsor of H.R. 7684, the current House companion measure, is Rep. Don Beyer (D-Va.).
