TALLAHASSEE, Florida — Gov. Ron DeSantis said Friday he would “happily sign” into law a suspension of the state’s gas tax if approved by the Florida Legislature. But the Republican governor remained skeptical of how much savings would be passed on to consumers.
This marks a bit of turnabout from DeSantis, who was dismissive of a gas tax holiday back in March, even though he had successfully pushed for a suspension of the tax back in 2022.
DeSantis’ remarks come as state legislators are in an ongoing budget special session in which they are evaluating whether to pass a roughly $100 million tax cut package that includes a tax holiday for firearm accessories, as well as fishing and camping supplies, and a tax break for residents who harden their homes for hurricanes.
So far, GOP legislative leaders have not discussed putting in place a gas tax holiday — which could cost hundreds of millions, depending on how long it lasts.
