The Energy Department is launching a center of excellence in Oregon to boost critical minerals research in step with industry, a top agency official said Tuesday.

Kyle Haustveit, the assistant secretary for DOE’s Hydrocarbons and Geothermal Energy Office, said the center is being established in Albany, Oregon. Haustveit is also President Donald Trump’s nominee to serve as undersecretary of Energy.

“We’re going to focus on our industry partnerships, and the best way to do that is to invite industry into our labs and for us to spend time with industry,” Haustveit told attendees at the USEA’s U.S. Energy Policy Forum in Washington. “To solidify this, we’re creating centers of excellence.”
