DOE loan program back under Republican microscope

House lawmakers will scrutinize the Department of Energy’s loan programs this week in a hearing looking at what Republicans call its “risky” actions.

The hearing of the House Science, Space and Technology Subcommittee on Energy comes as Republicans and the Trump administration look to stop billions of dollars in green energy loans and guarantees from DOE’s Loan Programs Office.

As Republicans were preparing for their takeover of Washington in December, many pondered the office’s fate. At the very least, they said, its direction would have to change.

“The LPO needs to have all energy, if we go forward with it at all,” said Rep. Brett Guthrie (R-Ky.), who was then running to chair the House Energy and Commerce Committee. “It needs to focus on everything, essentially an all-of-the-above energy mandate.”
