The move would revive the rule implemented by the first Trump administration that was reversed under President Joe Biden.

The Energy Department proposed overhauling its procedures and policies Thursday for how it runs its energy efficiency standards program — a move that would affect the standards for a range of household appliances and equipment, including gas stoves, washing machines and water heaters.

The Trump administration framed the proposal as an effort to end “the Green New Scam” — a term it uses to describe the energy policies of the former Biden administration.

“For too long, the American people paid the price for mandates that restricted consumer choice and drove up costs. President Trump promised to end this nonsense and that is exactly what we are doing,” Energy Secretary Chris Wright said in a statement. Wright directed a comprehensive review of the standards program upon his confirmation last year.

The secretary called the proposed process rule changes “common sense” and said they will “preserve the American people’s ability to choose home appliances and equipment that actually work — at prices they can afford.”
