The Department of Energy is partnering with technology giants Oracle and Nvidia to build the department’s largest “AI supercomputer,” adding to the Trump administration’s efforts to advance artificial intelligence and industries such as fusion.

DOE said on Tuesday that it is planning two new machines at Argonne National Laboratory in Illinois. One called Solstice would contain 100,000 Nvidia chips, becoming the largest supercomputer in DOE’s lab network.

A smaller supercomputer, Equinox, will begin construction immediately with scheduled delivery in the first half of 2026. It is expected to have about a tenth of the capacity of Solstice, with 10,000 Nvidia chips, DOE said.

DOE did not detail the cost of the project or provide a delivery date for Solstice, but said Oracle would give lab researchers access to the company’s AI resources. DOE did not respond to a request for comment.
