Trump officials said the move is part of the president’s effort to end weaponization of the federal government.

The Justice Department has filed a complaint in federal court to end disbarment proceedings against President Donald Trump’s former top environmental lawyer.

Disciplinary action against Jeff Clark, who served as regulatory czar at the start of Trump’s second term, constitutes an unlawful attempt to regulate the official action of federal attorneys, DOJ said. Clark’s prosecution stems from allegations that he worked to advance baseless claims that Trump defeated former President Joe Biden in the 2020 election.

DOJ’s lawsuit is the latest escalation in the Trump administration’s campaign to discredit criticisms of the president’s allies who attempted to thwart the election results.

“As our complaint and history make clear, the D.C. Bar has long acted as a blatantly partisan arm of leftist causes. No more,” said acting Attorney General Todd Blanche in a Wednesday statement accompanying DOJ’s complaint filed in federal court in Washington.
