The Edison Electric Institute has selected a private equity industry leader and former Trump administration official as its next president.

Drew Maloney, currently the president of the American Investment Council, will become EEI’s president July 1, the group’s board announced Monday.

Maloney will arrive at EEI during a tumultuous time for the group that represents investor-owned electric utilities. Dan Brouillette stepped down abruptly in October from the leadership position after less than a year, following dissatisfaction with his work among member companies. A number of other high-ranking officials have left the organization recently after longtime President Tom Kuhn stepped down in 2023.

In announcing the decision Monday, EEI Board Chair Maria Pope said in a statement that Maloney’s “extensive public policy expertise, financial and energy sector work, and trade association leadership will be a tremendous asset to EEI member companies and the millions of customers we serve.”
