The extension comes ahead of an expected, wide-ranging reduction in force across the department.

"[I]t is increasingly likely that our department will undergo a wide-ranging RIF to align with broader strategic priorities outlined by President Trump," Energy Secretary Chris Wright said in a message to staff. Samuel Corum/Sipa USA

The Energy Department extended the deadline until Friday for employees to voluntarily opt into a new deferred resignation offer — its latest step under the Trump administration’s push to reduce the federal workforce.

DOE promoted its Deferred Resignation Program last month allowing employees the option to voluntarily resign ahead of expected mandatory cuts across the agency.

In its email extending the deadline to 11:59 p.m. EDT on April 11, Energy Secretary Chris Wright again cited preparations for large-scale reductions in force following the president’s February executive order to shrink the federal workforce. The original enrollment period for that offer expired Tuesday.

In the message, Wright said he initiated the DRP to “mitigate the impact of potential involuntary separations” throughout the department.
