The environmental group Earthjustice asked a federal court Thursday to force the Trump administration to pay farmers and nonprofit organizations whose agriculture grants remain frozen.

Representing a handful of clients in seven states, Earthjustice said the hold on funds awarded during the Biden administration violates the Constitution and the Administrative Procedures Act, and that a victory in court could lead to the release of other grants tied to the Inflation Reduction Act across federal agencies.

The group filed the lawsuit in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.

“The Trump administration’s unlawful actions are hurting communities across the country. This is not government efficiency. It is thoughtless waste that inflicts unwarranted financial pain on small farmers and organizations trying to improve their communities,” said Hana Vizcarra, senior attorney at Earthjustice, in a news release.
