The lawsuit comes as EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin has suggested walking back mandatory reporting for big polluters.

An environmental group is suing the Trump administration for delaying the deadline for companies to disclose how much climate pollution they emitted last year.

The lawsuit from the Environmental Defense Fund, or EDF, filed in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, challenges the agency’s decision earlier this month to extend the 2024 deadline under the Greenhouse Gas Reporting Rule from March 31 to May 30.

EPA said it had extended the deadline because a filing system has not been launched. But EDF argued in its lawsuit that EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin shut down the portal without explanation and later extended the reporting deadline without allowing for public comment.

The environmental group said the information provides critical insight into pollution from some of the largest sources nationwide and comes as climate change is fueling more powerful storms and extreme heat waves.
