Widely used chemicals such as lead and benzene are among the final contenders for a lengthy risk review that could lead to restrictions or bans.
EPA revealed its list of 27 chemicals under consideration to be prioritized for risk evaluation under the Toxic Substances Control Act during a public webinar Monday afternoon.
The list hints which specific chemicals the agency is eyeing for possible future regulations. Agency officials will decide which five of those chemicals will move on to the next stage of the process in December.
The list covers a number of chemicals commonly used in plastics, such as benzene, styrene or bisphenol A (BPA). It also includes four highly toxic heavy metals and their compounds: antimony, arsenic, cobalt and lead.
