EPA moved Monday to end the use of the pesticide chlorpyrifos on most food crops in response to back-and-forth court rulings.
The agency is proposing regulations to revoke tolerances for chlorpyrifos on all but 11 crops, which would allow for some continued but limited uses.
Manufacturers voluntarily had already sought to cancel the uses EPA seeks to end, making the proposal something of a formality.
The tolerances dictate how much pesticide residue is considered safe on food. Chlorpyrifos has been shown to damage the nervous system, especially in babies and young children, even at low levels of exposure caused by residue on crops.
