EPA has renamed an environmental program for the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America” in response to President Donald Trump push to rebrand the 620,000-square-mile waterway.
Trump signed an executive order his first day in office renaming the body of water flanked by Mexico and the Southeastern U.S. to the “Gulf of America.” The order also mandated that Mount Denali in Alaska be referred to as Mount McKinley as part of a push to “honor“ the contributions of visionary and patriotic Americans in our Nation’s rich past.”
EPA’s water quality program in the Gulf is dedicated to restoring and protecting the waterway and supporting fishing and other water-dependent economic activities. The Gulf of America’s ocean-based economy is worth about $104 billion, according to NOAA.
“The Gulf of America will help power our Great American Comeback. We are pleased to recognize it and ready to protect it,” EPA administrator Lee Zeldin said in a statement Wednesday.
