A hearing this week comes as funding from the bipartisan infrastructure law will expire next year.

Lawmakers will hear this week from water providers and a state environmental regulator as they consider reauthorizing federal funding for water projects from the 2021 infrastructure law.

The hearing before the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee will focus on building on the “successes” of the law, according to committee leadership. Signed by former President Joe Biden, the law included tens of billions of dollars in funding to help communities remove lead pipes, filter out toxic chemicals and make other water infrastructure upgrades.

Chair Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) will begin the process for reauthorizing those programs during the hearing, said Brent Scott, a spokesperson for committee Republicans.

“You can expect the chairman to talk about the importance of policies that strengthen the ability of underserved communities to complete water projects, reinforce the principle of cooperative federalism, and her focus on outcomes that deliver safe and reliable water infrastructure across the country,” Scott said in an email.
