Sen. Joni Ernst is proposing to offload some of the federal government’s prime real estate in the nation’s capital, including the Department of Energy’s headquarters.
The Iowa Republican this week introduced S. 2173, the “Federal Office Realignment and Sale of Assets for Leveraging Efficiency (FOR SALE) Act,” which would sell off six properties in Washington, leading to $400 million in revenue and cutting $2.9 billion in costs for overdue maintenance, according to the senator’s office.
“I am putting these federal fixer uppers FOR SALE and ending the backwards game of Washington-opoly where taxpayers always lose!” Ernst said in a statement.
Any agency located in one of the buildings listed would have to vacate the premises and find space elsewhere within 18 months. In addition, no later than two years after those agencies leave, the General Services Administration will sell those buildings for “fair market value.”
