BRUSSELS — The European Commission will not unveil a sustainability label for data centers Wednesday as planned, according to two industry representatives briefed on the delay, amid a dispute over the role of nuclear power.
The rating scheme was expected to be presented as part of the Commission’s tech sovereignty package, a broad push aimed at reducing Europe’s dependence on foreign technology.
The label would benchmark the environmental performance of data centers, using metrics including energy and water efficiency, renewable energy use and waste heat recovery. The rating was set to be applied from August 2027.
But its publication has been delayed after significant pushback over a draft version published on March 27, the two industry representatives told POLITICO.
