BRUSSELS — The European Parliament will try to delete the European Commission’s proposal to empower itself to unilaterally withdraw certain industrial goods from the EU’s new carbon border levy, according to a draft document seen by POLITICO.
Led by Dutch lawmaker Mohammed Chahim with the center-left Socialists & Democrats, Parliament’s environment committee will vote next week on compromise amendments for the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism.
Among the amendments in the draft is a bid to fully kill the controversial Article 27a, dubbed the “kill-switch.”
The article has become a lightning rod of debate and gives the Commission the right to temporarily shield foreign goods from the border levy if “serious and unforeseen circumstances” dangerously affects the EU market.
