A first-of-its-kind state program to protect condominium buildings against hurricane winds allocated all $30 million in grants in just five days, signaling potential nationwide demand to expand resilience programs for homes.
Florida became the first state to give condominium associations money to protect buildings against extreme winds, allocating up to $175,000 to more than 150 associations in November. Florida and other states have for years given resilience grants to individual homeowners.
“This is clearly a program where there’s a lot of need for it,” said Florida state Sen. Nick DiCeglie, a St. Petersburg Republican who sponsored legislation creating the condo program. “And that is why it went by in a week, which is probably quicker than I anticipated, but not surprising nonetheless.”
Florida legislators and state officials are looking at giving the condo program more money in 2025 — and touting it to other states.
