TALLAHASSEE, Florida — The state Senate on Thursday, largely along party lines, passed a bill that supporters said would help address conspiracy theories that jets are spraying chemicals or heavy metals into the atmosphere for reasons including weather modification.
Details: The Senate voted 28-9 to pass the bill after Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) said Wednesday that he supports the measure and that the House had “gutted” the companion legislation. He has recently increased his criticism of House Republican leaders over a variety of issues.
Senate Democrats argued in earlier committee hearings that the bill addresses a threat that doesn’t exist. NOAA says there is extensive research underway to understand the benefits and risks of various techniques to reduce global warming.
“People have got a lot of kooky ideas; they can get in and put things in the atmosphere to block the sun and save us from climate change,” DeSantis said in a video on X. “We’re not playing that game in Florida.”
