CALGARY, Alberta — Ontario Premier Doug Ford says he’s working closely with the federal government to “move quick” on building a pipeline linking Alberta’s oil sands to refineries in Ontario, arguing that the project is critical to strengthening the economy and reducing Canada’s reliance on foreign energy.

“Finally, for the first time in the history of our country, we’re unleashing an economic power that we have,” Ford told POLITICO on Monday on the sidelines of the Calgary Stampede.

The premier says his team is working with Prime Minister Mark Carney’s office on the proposed Northern Shield Energy Corridor, which he said will eventually include an oil pipeline that stretches 3,300 kilometers from Alberta to Sarnia, Ontario.
