California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Friday said that he will not move this year to extend operations at Diablo Canyon, California’s only nuclear power plant, beyond the current expiration date.
What happened: During a press conference in Oakland, POLITICO asked Newsom (D) whether the state should act this year to keep Diablo Canyon open beyond 2030.
“That will be the determination of the next administration, a determination made by policymakers [who] will be here a lot longer than I will,” Newsom said. “I have a sell-by date in five months.”
Why it matters: Newsom’s comments mark the first time the governor has taken a position on whether the state should extend operations at its lone nuclear power plant. His remarks are a major blow to Pacific Gas & Electric, which operates the plant and has made it clear that it wants to see action this year.
