House Republicans advanced a major water permitting package Wednesday that would reduce Clean Water Act requirements and cement into law Trump administration priorities.

The ‘‘Promoting Efficient Review for Modern Infrastructure Today (PERMIT) Act” passed the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee 30-34, with no Democratic support, and now moves to the full House for consideration.

The bill targets a range of programs under the nation’s primary water protection law, which Republicans say have served to impede energy projects and other forms of economic development.

“If we want to build American infrastructure, strengthen our energy independence and support our communities while protecting clean water, these kinds of reforms are, quite frankly, essential,” said Rep. David Rouzer (R-N.C.).
