Green groups report decline in staff diversity

The drop follows years of increased diversity on the staffs of environmental nonprofits.

Environmental nonprofits saw a decline in staff of color in 2024, marking the first such drop since a watchdog group started tracking the data.

Green 2.0, a group that promotes diversity in environmental organizations and foundations, issued its annual report card Tuesday detailing diversity inside the environmental movement.

“Alarmingly, this year reports the first decline in staff of color at all levels of [nonprofit organizations] in the history of this report,” Green 2.0 said of its findings. This year marks the eighth consecutive year the organization has released its findings.

Foundations saw “marginal improvements” in staff diversity, Green 2.0 said, but “the glaring trend” at nonprofits “reminds us that progress requires intentional and consistent effort to not just hire, but also retain, staff of color.”
