Interior Secretary Deb Haaland on Wednesday joined the Democratic establishment’s Kamala Harris-for-president bandwagon with a written statement endorsing the vice president’s candidacy.

In her statement, first reported by the Huffington Post, Haaland indicated she was speaking in her “personal capacity” as she “wholeheartedly” backed Harris’ second bid for the White House.

“Kamala has been a staunch advocate for Tribal people, for women, and for marginalized communities,” Haaland said in the statement, adding that “she has the strength to win and lead, and I will do everything I can to ensure her success.”

In March 2021, it was Harris who swore in Haaland as the first Native American head of the Interior Department. In her personal statement, Haaland said that “serving under President Biden has been a dream that not even my ancestors could have imagined” and that she “can think of no greater priority than to ensure that the historic progress he has made on behalf of all Americans endures.”
