Hearing shows GOP split on Trump desire for Greenland

Some Republicans are cheering President Donald Trump’s talk about taking over the island. Others are more cautious.

Senators clashed on Wednesday over how to counter China and Russia’s push to control the Arctic, with some Republicans open to President Donald Trump’s quest to acquire Greenland and other lawmakers calling for a more collaborative approach.

Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Chair Ted Cruz (R-Texas) argued during a hearing that Trump’s effort should not be dismissed. He cited the island territory’s rich mineral wealth.

“Some may argue that the U.S. purchasing territory is out of the question,” said Cruz. “But it isn’t unusual for the U.S. to do so — even from our ally Denmark.”

Although Denmark and Greenland have both said the island is not for sale, they have expressed willingness to work with the U.S. Trump has not ruled out using force.
