President-elect Donald Trump’s pick to lead the Department of Defense appears poised to roll back bipartisan climate initiatives at the Pentagon.
Pete Hegseth’s Tuesday nomination hearing was largely devoid of policy discussion, as Democratic senators opted to grill the former Fox News host on personal scandals and perceived lack of leadership experience.
Still, in one exchange, Hegseth suggested climate change would not be a Pentagon priority under his leadership.
“My secretary of the Navy, should I be confirmed, will not be focused on climate change in the Navy, just like the secretary of the Air Force won’t be focused on algae-powered fighter jets, or the secretary of the Army won’t be focused on electric-powered tanks. We’re going to be focused on lethality and defeating our enemy,” Hegseth said.
