Senate Energy and Natural Resources ranking member Martin Heinrich of New Mexico has endorsed former Interior Secretary Deb Haaland to be their state’s next governor.

Heinrich declined to endorse Haaland last year even though other members of the state’s congressional delegation quickly threw their support behind her.

Haaland earlier this week beat her main primary opponent, Bernalillo County District Attorney Sam Bregman, by a comfortable margin and is well placed to win the general election.

“I’ve worked with Deb a long time, and I can tell you this: Deb is incredibly kind, leads with compassion, and cares deeply about New Mexico and the people who call it home,” Heinrich said.
