“Gutting telework and remote work programs” has created “unnecessary financial strain” for civil servants, according to the National Treasury Employees Union.

A government union is pushing to revive telework as federal employees struggle with rising gas prices.

The National Treasury Employees Union sent a letter on Thursday to the Office of Personnel Management, saying federal workers, like the rest of the country, are dealing with “an affordability crisis” as costs increase for food, health care, utilities and gas. Civil servants need relief and the government can help, the union said.

“Failing to provide employees with adequate pay while gutting telework and remote work programs as gas prices soar creates unnecessary financial strain for federal workers,” NTEU President Doreen Greenwald said in the letter sent to OPM Director Scott Kupor.

Greenwald added, “Therefore, I urge you to take action to address the affordability challenges facing federal employees by providing them with a fair pay increase next year and immediately reinstating telework programs.”
