For a brief period, Kamala Harris was the Senate’s top Democrat on Superfund.
There’s little to show from the now-presidential candidate’s stint as ranking member of the Subcommittee on Superfund, Waste Management and Regulatory Oversight, a position she held through her first year as a California senator.
But at the crux of Superfund is an issue that “is part of a core mission of the U.S. Government, which is to keep the American people safe,” Harris said during a 2017 Senate committee hearing, her first ever as ranking member.
Superfund, EPA’s program for cleaning up the nation’s most contaminated sites, saw new life under the Biden administration, but sustaining momentum will be a challenge.
