The House Appropriations Committee broke into a partisan debate Wednesday over President Donald Trump’s arch project.
The panel voted 32-24, along party lines, to block an amendment from Rep. Chellie Pingree (D-Maine) that would prevent construction of Trump’s proposal to build a “triumphal arch” in Washington.
Democrats wanted the legislative language included in the Interior-Environment funding bill for fiscal 2027, which members were marking up Wednesday afternoon.
“The historic view from Arlington National Cemetery should not be desecrated by this arch,” said Pingree, the ranking member of the Interior-Environment Appropriations Subcommittee. “It should not be overshadowed by a monument to one man’s ego.”
