The House Homeland Security Committee will vote on legislation that aims to secure of pipeline facilities against cybersecurity threats and acts of terrorism.
H.R. 9469, the “Pipeline Security Act,” from Rep. Robert Garcia (D-Calif.), would require the Transportation Security Administration to develop a strategy to protect and improve the security of the the nation’s critical pipeline transportation and pipeline facilities against outside threats.
Supporters have been pushing similar legislation for years. It gained prominence after a ransomware attack shut down the Colonial Pipeline system.
Bipartisan support has not given the legislation enough momentum for passage. Some lawmakers would rather the Department of Energy take a greater role in pipeline security.
