House Republicans this week will once again spotlight what they say is the Biden administration’s failure to secure the southern border, resulting in trash piles and damage to federal lands.
The Natural Resources Subcommittee on Federal Lands legislative hearing Thursday involves only one bill: H.R. 9678, filed last week by Rep. Juan Ciscomani (R-Ariz.).
The proposal — which has 29 co-sponsors, all Republican — targets strengthening “public safety” on federal lands and addressing “hazardous trash piles along the southern border,” according to Ciscomani’s office.
The “Federal Lands Amplified Security for the Homeland (FLASH) Act” calls for building “navigable roads” that would help law enforcement officials protect the border. It would also “allow states to place temporary barriers on federal lands” as well as require “federal managers to develop a plan to reduce hazardous trash piles,” a summary says.
