Both the House and Senate are ramping up work on the annual defense authorization legislation, beginning to lay out fiscal 2026 plans for the Pentagon’s energy and environment programs.
The House Armed Services Committee has already finalized draft text of the National Defense Authorization Act, which was obtained by POLITICO. The panel is expected to mark up its bill as soon as July 15.
Senate Armed Services subcommittees will begin marking up their sections Tuesday. The full committee will begin processing the bill Wednesday. The Senate activity will happen mostly behind closed doors. It’s unclear when text will emerge.
The House version of the bill does not propose to increase the Pentagon’s budget relative to the currently enacted level of $848 billion. Republicans included a one-time $150 billion appropriation in their recently passed reconciliation bill.
