“You must end this campaign of lying to the public and coercing other agencies to assist you,” Energy and Commerce Democrats said in a letter to EPA chief Lee Zeldin.

House Democrats are scrutinizing the Trump administration’s attempts to claw back billions of dollars of grant money from a major EPA program.

The launch of an investigation Tuesday by Democrats on the Energy and Commerce Committee comes after EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin has sought to recoup nearly $20 billion in Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund money while the administration studies the program. Multiple grant recipients for the “green bank” program have since filed lawsuits.

With a letter released publicly Tuesday, the Democrats, led by committee ranking member Frank Pallone (D-N.J.), are pushing Zeldin to answer questions about what he’s done to freeze the money, as well as to take immediate action to allow the funds to be used.

They accuse Zeldin of making “false claims and politically motivated attacks” and say he may be violating the law.
