House lawmakers will meet this week to discuss whether foreign actors are using nonprofits to wield influence in the United States, which could include a look at environmental organizations.

The Ways and Means Committee will meet Tuesday for a hearing titled: “Foreign Influence in American Non-profits: Unmasking Threats From Beijing and Beyond.”

An advisory for the session says the panel will examine “the ways foreign actors have funneled millions of dollars through networks of tax-exempt organizations to create, support, and fuel disruption and illegal activity across the country.”

Panel spokesperson J.P. Freire said the hearing will focus on activism by nonprofits funded by foreign entities in general, which could include environmental groups as well as with other advocacy organizations.
