The House will vote this week on a sweeping water infrastructure bill that would authorize projects to reduce hurricane damage, address flooding and restore wetland ecosystems like the Everglades.

The “Thomas R. Carper Water Resources Development Act of 2024” could get a vote as soon as Monday. It’s reaching the House under suspension of the rules — a way to fast-track legislation with broad support.

The bipartisan bill would guide the Army Corps of Engineers’ work in the coming years on water resources — from flood control to coastal resiliency to navigation and dams.

It would authorize 17 new projects, some of which have been in the works for years. It would also direct the agency to carry out more than 200 feasibility studies for other potential projects to ease flooding, improve wastewater infrastructure and address other water challenges made worse by climate change.
