House panel OKs funding bill with NOAA, science cuts

Appropriators rejected an amendment to prohibit funding for agreements to cancel offshore wind leases.

House appropriators advanced their Commerce-Justice-Science bill Wednesday, approving a proposal that supports weather forecasting initiatives while slashing climate research and other science programs.

Appropriations Committee Republicans advanced the fiscal 2027 spending bill on a party-line 32-28 vote after rejecting Democratic amendments on offshore wind project cancellations, disaster assistance and the redevelopment of Alcatraz Island.

The CJS bill is the fifth fiscal 2027 bill to get the committee’s approval, following Agriculture-FDA, Military Construction-Veterans Affairs, Financial Services-General Government and State-Foreign Operations. The House will vote on the military construction bill Thursday.

Wednesday’s markup highlighted the partisan rifts on energy, natural resources and law enforcement issues, even as lawmakers found consensus on other topics, including a need to bolster the National Weather Service.
