The House voted Thursday to officially change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, aligning with an executive order from President Donald Trump.

H.R. 276, the “Gulf of America Act,” from Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), passed in a 211-206 vote. Republican Rep. Don Bacon of Nebraska, a moderate, crossed the aisle to vote with Democrats against the bill.

The measure would make it more difficult for future presidents to undo Trump’s name change. But the legislation faces an uphill battle to clear the Senate’s filibuster threshold.

Democrats slammed GOP members for devoting time to the bill, which they framed as unnecessarily catering to the president. House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries of New York took to the floor to call the bill “silly, small-minded and sycophantic.”
