The House this week will decide the fate of more than $1 trillion of federal funding, including for home energy assistance, critical mineral supply chains, chemical cleanups, pipeline safety, and other energy and environment programs.
Lawmakers are set to vote as soon as Tuesday on the fiscal 2026 spending package the Senate approved Friday. It contains five full-year funding measures and a short-term extension of funding for the Department of Homeland Security, which covers disaster aid and mitigation programs.
The majority of that discretionary funding lapsed over the weekend, but congressional leaders are hoping they can get the spending legislation to President Donald Trump’s desk quickly enough to avoid an extended shutdown.
That could be a significant challenge. House GOP leaders had planned to pursue a bipartisan approach to passage, but Democratic leaders indicated Saturday they would not help Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) secure the dozens of Democratic votes needed to advance the package, POLITICO reported.
