The House will vote on legislation this week to extend tax benefits for victims of natural disasters.

The “Doug LaMalfa Federal Disaster Tax Relief Certainty Act,” H.R. 5366, sponsored by Rep. Greg Steube (R-Fla.), would make it easier for people to claim personal losses after disasters. The bill is named for a California GOP lawmaker who died in January.

“Allowing taxpayers to write off damages from natural disasters is a no-brainer,” Steube said in a statement last month.

House leaders are moving expeditiously to take up the legislation, in sharp contrast to the last Congress, when they wanted the measure to ride in a broader tax package. Steube in 2024 gathered enough signatures to force a vote.
