The House is planning to vote this week on Republican legislation to promote geothermal energy and a contentious bill that Democrats say could threaten nonprofit groups.

The chamber will debate Rep. Russ Fulcher’s (R-Idaho) H.R. 1449, the “Committing Leases for Energy Access Now Act,” to require more frequent federal geothermal lease sales and speed up permitting for those projects.

The measure was part of H.R. 1, the House Republicans’ energy and permitting package from last year, which will serve as a blueprint for next Congress.

Just last week, the House approved H.R. 7409, the “Harnessing Energy at Thermal Sources Act” from Rep. Young Kim (R-Calif.), to also promote geothermal energy development.
